New pond stocking — why order matters

Bluegill and fathead minnows go in first. They establish a forage base — small fish and invertebrates that feed growing bass. Largemouth bass go in 6–12 months later, when bluegill have spawned at least once and there is adequate food.

Stocking bass into an empty pond produces stunted fish that eat each other. This is the single most common mistake in new pond management. The calculator above scales Extension-recommended rates to your pond size and adjusts for new, restock, or supplemental scenarios.

Reference stocking rates

SpeciesNew Pond RateNotes
Largemouth bass50–100/acreStock 6–12 months after bluegill
Bluegill400–500/acreStock first
Channel catfish50–100/acreOptional; competes with bass food chain
Hybrid striped bass25–50/acreFast growing, does not reproduce
Fathead minnows5–10 lbs/acreForage base — stock with bluegill
Grass carp5–10/acreVegetation control only; check state regulations

Grass carp are regulated in most states — confirm with your state fish and wildlife agency before stocking triploid grass carp.

Soil and water quality before stocking

Lime if pH is below 6.5 — agricultural lime at 1–2 tons/acre is common on acidic pond bottoms. Fertilize to support a plankton bloom if water is too clear (fish need something to eat from day one).

Conduct a basic water test before you spend money on fingerlings. New ponds especially — runoff from freshly exposed soil can cause pH and hardness problems that stress fish at stocking.

Managing a pond after stocking

Harvest bass aggressively in years 2–3 to keep the population in balance with bluegill. Do not take bass below 12 inches — those are your future brood fish.

Feed channel catfish if you want faster growth to table size. Monitor water quality in summer — stratification can cause oxygen crashes and fish kills on hot, still days.

For pond construction or renovation financing, run numbers through the farm loan calculator. For hay ground around the pond, see the hay baling cost calculator.

Where to buy fingerlings

State fish hatcheries (some states sell at cost to pond owners), private hatcheries, and Extension pond management programs. Call your state Extension fisheries specialist before you order — they know which strains perform in your water and which species require permits.

Pond Stocking Calculator FAQ

How many bass can I stock per acre?

50–100 fingerlings per acre for a new sport pond, stocked after bluegill establish.

What is the best fish to stock in a farm pond?

Bass and bluegill for sport fishing; channel catfish for production. Match to your goals and regulations.

How long before I can fish a newly stocked pond?

2–3 years for catchable bass with good management; catfish can reach table size faster with feeding.

Do I need a permit to stock my pond?

Often yes for grass carp and some non-native species. Check with your state agency.

How do I get rid of unwanted fish before restocking?

Rotenone treatment, draining, or renovation — then restock at reduced rates after confirming the pond is clear.
