Gestation period for cows

Choose a breed and enter your breeding or AI date to see your calving window and milestones.

How long is cattle gestation?

The average gestation period for cows is 283 days. That works out to about 9 months and 10 days from breeding or AI to calving. Individual cows vary. British breeds run a little shorter; Bos indicus breeds run longer.

If you are standing at the chute wondering when she will calve, use the calculator above. Pick your breed, enter the breeding date, and you get a due date plus an early and late window. No spreadsheet. No paper chart to dig through.

Cow pregnancy period in months (and days)

Most ranchers think in months when they are planning fall calving or spring turnout. Here is the quick math:

TimeframeWhat it means
~9 monthsRough planning figure for any breed
283 daysIndustry average for crossbred or unknown sire
279–292 daysNormal range depending on breed and calf sex

The calculator tracks gestation day by day once you enter a date. You will see days elapsed, days remaining, current trimester, and upcoming management milestones. That beats guessing from a wall calendar in the barn office.

Angus gestation length and other breeds

Angus averages 281 days, a few days shorter than the 283-day industry average. That matters when you are sorting close-up cows or lining up a sale date.

Breed averages are planning figures. Published data varies by source — an individual cow’s actual gestation may differ by up to ±12 days from the breed average depending on sire genetics, calf sex, dam age, and nutrition.

A cow bred to a Brahman bull on the same day as an Angus cow can calve 10 days later. Enough to miss a sale window or overlap with planting season. If you run a commercial crossbred herd and do not know the sire, use Average / crossbred (283 days) until preg check confirms pregnancy.

How to calculate when your cow will calve

Add your breed’s gestation length to the breeding or AI date. An Angus cow bred October 1 is expected to calve around July 9 the following year based on the 281-day Angus average — a few days earlier than a Continental or Brahman-cross cow bred on the same date. The calculator shows an early and late window (±7 days for most breeds) because nature does not run on a calendar.

For herd planning, also review stocking rates for your pasture, calving season preparation, and if you run mixed species, the goat gestation calculator and sheep gestation calculator.

Reverse mode: plan breeding from a target calving date

Want calves on the ground before a specific sale or grazing rotation? Switch to Target Calving Date mode in the calculator. Enter when you want to calve and your breed. The tool returns the breeding or AI date to aim for.

Plan a ±7-day buffer and breed on the early side of the window if your market timing is tight.

Trimesters: cattle gestation day by day

Cattle pregnancy breaks into three trimesters. The calculator tracks where you are in the pregnancy and lists what is coming next:

  1. First trimester (days 1–90): Highest early embryonic loss risk. Schedule preg checks at 30–45 days.
  2. Second trimester (days 91–190): Fetal growth accelerates. Booster vaccinations if your vet recommends them.
  3. Third trimester (days 191+): Calf gains most of its birth weight here. Increase nutrition and move cows to calving pasture about 30 days before the due date.

You do not need a separate chart for each cow if the calculator is in your pocket.

How long is cattle gestation in Texas?

Texas runs everything from straight Angus herds in the Panhandle to Brahman and Brahman-cross cattle in South and East Texas. Gestation length depends on what is in your pasture, not the state line.

British and Continental breeds in North and Central Texas typically calve around the same windows as the national averages above. Herds with Bos indicus influence (common in hotter, foggier parts of the state) should plan on 287 to 291 days for many cows. If you are unsure, use the breed dropdown in the calculator or the Average / crossbred setting until you know the sire.

Cow gestation period chart and cattle gestation table (PDF)

When cell service drops in the pasture, a printed chart on the wall still works. Download our free cattle gestation table PDF for the barn office, vet chute, or truck visor. It lists major beef and dairy breeds with gestation days in a quick lookup table.

Frequently asked questions

How long is cattle gestation for a first-calf heifer?

Same breed averages apply. Heifers sometimes calve a day or two later than mature cows, but plan from the breed table unless your vet advises otherwise.

Do twins shorten gestation?

Twin pregnancies sometimes calve a few days early, but individual variation is high. Treat the calculator result as a planning estimate, not a guarantee.

How accurate is AI dating?

AI and natural service dates are equally valid inputs. If you only know the breeding season start, use the earliest plausible breeding date for a conservative (later) calving estimate.

When should I call the vet?

Contact your veterinarian if a cow passes her late window by more than 10–14 days without calving, or if you see distress at any stage.
