Understanding sheep gestation

The average sheep pregnancy lasts approximately 147 days — roughly 4.8 to 5 months from breeding to lambing. That number is the industry default for crossbred and unknown-breed flocks in the US. For a complete breakdown by breed and month, see our sheep gestation period guide.

Individual ewes vary. Breed, litter size, nutrition, and management all shift timing by a few days. Twins and triplets often arrive earlier than singles. Use the calculator above for your breed and breeding date, then plan pen moves and feed changes around the early and late window.

If you only know when the ram went in with the flock, use the earliest exposure date for a conservative (later) lambing estimate.

Sheep gestation period in months

147 days works out to about 4 months and 27 days — close enough that most producers simply refer to sheep pregnancy as approximately 5 months.

Days matter more than months when you are scheduling CDT boosters, flushing ewes, or staffing the lambing barn. The calculator tracks gestation week by week once you enter a date.

Sheep gestation by breed

Breed averages are planning figures. Coat color — black sheep or white sheep — generally does not change gestation duration.

Signs a ewe is close to lambing

For a full pre-season checklist, see our lambing season prep guide.

Watch for these in the final weeks:

  • Udder enlargement — bagging up tight and shiny means lambing is very close
  • Restlessness and separation from the flock
  • Vulva swelling and mucus discharge
  • Nesting behavior — pawing, circling, repeated lying down and standing
  • Appetite changes — many ewes go off feed before active labor

Contact your veterinarian if a ewe pushes for more than 30 minutes without progress or if you see an abnormal presentation.

Sheep gestation week by week

The calculator shows a week-by-week timeline. Here is the expanded summary:

First trimester (weeks 1–6)

Weeks 1–2: fertilization occurs. Weeks 3–4: embryo attachment. Weeks 5–6: organ formation begins. Highest early loss risk — avoid unnecessary stress and handling.

Middle trimester (weeks 7–16)

Weeks 7–8: rapid fetal development. Weeks 9–12: visible abdominal growth. Weeks 13–16: increased nutritional demand. Good window for hoof trimming and health checks before the ewe gets heavy.

Final trimester (weeks 17–21+)

Weeks 17–21: lamb development accelerates. Approximately 70% of fetal growth occurs in the final 6 weeks — increase grain and quality hay gradually. Final weeks: lambing preparation signs intensify.

Sheep gestation cycle

Ewes cycle on an estrus rhythm of approximately every 16–17 days during breeding season. Heat lasts 24–36 hours — that is your window to introduce the ram or schedule AI.

Most wool breeds and traditional meat breeds are seasonal breeders — shorter daylight in fall triggers cycling, roughly August through January in the Northern Hemisphere. Hair breeds like Katahdin and some Dorper lines can breed year-round with peak fertility in fall.

If the ewe does not return to heat 16–17 days after breeding, she is likely pregnant. Confirm with ultrasound or blood test per your vet’s protocol.

How to calculate your sheep’s due date

Add gestation days to the breeding date. A ewe bred January 1 at 147 days should lamb around May 28. Select your breed in the calculator for breed-specific defaults, or toggle the custom gestation override (140–152 days) if your vet recommends a different figure.

Plan pen moves, flushing, and lambing supervision with a few days buffer on either side of the estimated date.

Reverse mode: plan breeding from a target lambing date

Switch to Expected Lambing Date mode in the calculator. Enter when you want lambs on the ground and your breed. The tool returns the breeding date to aim for.

Account for the 16–17 day estrus cycle — breed on the early side of your target window if market timing is tight.

Frequently asked questions

How many months is a sheep pregnant?

Approximately 147 days, or about 5 months. Most producers plan lambing around the five-month mark.

How many times a year do sheep go into heat?

Most sheep are seasonal breeders and enter heat repeatedly every 16–17 days during breeding season.

When should I give CDT vaccine before lambing?

Give the pre-lambing CDT booster 4–6 weeks before lambing so ewes pass antibodies in colostrum. First-time ewes need the primary series earlier — two doses 3–4 weeks apart before the booster.

What should I feed ewes in late gestation?

Increase grain gradually in the final 4–6 weeks when roughly 70% of fetal growth occurs. Target 0.5–1.5 lb/day supplemental grain depending on body condition and expected litter size.

How do I know when lambing is imminent?

When you can no longer feel the ligaments on either side of the tailhead, lambing is typically within 12–24 hours. Udder bagging, nesting, and restlessness are other late signs.

What is the Suffolk sheep gestation period?

Suffolk sheep average 146 days — slightly shorter than the 147-day industry default.

How many days does it take for a ewe to lamb?

Pregnancy averages around 147 days before lambing, though individual ewes may vary by a few days.

Why can’t you touch lambs when pregnant?

Some diseases present in sheep birthing fluids can pose risk to pregnant people. Avoid assisting lambing or handling aborted material without gloves. Consult your physician if concerned.

Can sheep give birth early?

Yes. Twins and triplets often arrive a few days before the 147-day average. Stress, nutrition, and breed can shift timing.

Can sheep go overdue?

Ewes occasionally lamb a few days past their due date. Contact your veterinarian if a ewe passes her late window without lambing or shows distress.

How accurate are sheep gestation calculators?

Calculators use breed averages and are accurate for planning. Individual ewes vary by litter size, nutrition, and genetics — use the ±5-day window.

Do twins affect sheep gestation?

Yes. Ewes carrying multiples often lamb 1–3 days earlier than those carrying singles.

Can stress affect sheep pregnancy?

Severe stress, poor nutrition, or handling during early pregnancy can increase embryo loss. Keep ewes calm and well fed, especially in the final trimester.

When should pregnant ewes receive extra nutrition?

Increase feed gradually in the final 4–6 weeks when most fetal growth occurs. Adjust for body condition and expected litter size.

How many lambs can sheep have?

Singles, twins, and triplets are common depending on breed. Some prolific breeds average more than two lambs per lambing.

How long is lamb labor?

Active labor usually lasts 30 minutes to a few hours. Call your vet if pushing continues beyond 30 minutes without progress.
