Grain bin cost calculator for new bin purchases

This grain bin cost calculator estimates what a new bin might cost to buy, not just how many bushels it holds. Enter diameter and height (optional peak), then either a $/bushel of capacity from a dealer rule of thumb or a total installed quote. Capacity uses the same USDA bushel math as our volume tool (1.2445 cubic feet per bushel).

Need capacity only? Use the grain bin volume calculator. That page answers “how much fits.” This page answers “what should I budget to buy it.”

Capacity first, then price

  1. Measure or choose diameter and eave height.
  2. Add roof peak height if you want a closer bushel estimate.
  3. Enter cost per bushel of rated capacity or paste a full dealer quote.
  4. Read estimated total cost and effective $/bu.

Freight, foundation, aeration, legs, and electrical often sit outside a bare bin price. Treat the result as a planning envelope, then confirm with your dealer.

Bin cost vs commercial storage

Owning a bin spreads cost over years of harvests; elevator variable storage rates bill monthly. Run both when deciding store-on-farm vs deliver. Also check grain moisture for shrink if you dry on-farm, and farm equipment or farm loan tools if you finance the purchase.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from bin volume?

Bin volume estimates bushels only. This calculator adds purchase-cost fields ($/bu or total quote) on top of the same capacity math.

What $/bu should I enter?

Ask your dealer for recent installed cost per bushel for the size you want. Bands change with steel prices and options.

Does this include foundation and aeration?

Only if you put them in the total quote. The $/bu mode is only as complete as the rate you enter.
