Grain Bin Volume Calculator

Estimate bushel capacity for cylindrical grain bins. Enter diameter, height, and grain type for accurate storage planning.

Grain bin volume calculator overview

This grain bin volume calculator estimates bushel capacity for a cylindrical bin with an optional conical peak. Enter diameter, wall height, peak height, and grain type. Bushel capacity uses the USDA standard of 1.2445 cubic feet per bushel; grain type provides test weight for an optional pounds estimate.

Use it before harvest to decide whether to store or sell. Pair with our store vs sell grain guide and grain moisture calculator.

How to estimate grain bin capacity

  1. Measure bin diameter at the widest point (feet).
  2. Enter side wall height from the floor to where the cone starts.
  3. Add peak height if the roof is conical.
  4. Select grain type for test weight (used to estimate total pounds, not bushel volume).

The calculator returns cubic feet and bushels. Always verify with your bin manufacturer specs and account for compaction, moisture, and aeration floors.

Why bushels matter at harvest

Storage capacity drives your store vs sell decision. Knowing bushels in the bin prevents over-committing to forward contracts or paying unexpected commercial storage fees.

Grain bin volume FAQ

What test weights does the calculator use?

Corn 56 lb/bu, soybeans 60, wheat 60, sorghum 56. Bushel volume is the same for all types (1.2445 cubic feet per bushel). Test weight only affects the optional pounds estimate.

Does this include a hopper bottom?

The default model is cylindrical with an optional roof peak. For hopper-bottom bins, use manufacturer capacity charts alongside this estimate.

Is the grain bin calculator free?

Yes. No login, no download. Run it on your phone in the field.
